    Nietzsche on Metaphor

    Nietzsche on Metaphor

    Staff Seminar

    Speaker: Dr. Wong Kwok Kui

    Abstract

This paper will look at Nietzsche’s early writing on language and metaphor, especially his well-known definition of truth as a “moving army of metaphors” in his On the Truth and Lies of Extra-Moral Senses. If language cannot represent truth, what is it good for? Is it only good for creating illusion? Comparing Nietzsche with Herder on the origin of language, this paper will first show that the creation of metaphor is closely related to affect: the stronger an object emotionally impresses us, the higher its potential of becoming a metaphor. Nietzsche’s answer to our question in his later period would be that since there is no objective truth free from emotion and affect, the only way we can appropriate truth is to create more metaphors by infusing even stronger affects to include as many perspectives as possible, a state close to his earlier Dionysian ecstasy, which reappears in the later period as the will to power, grand style, and perspectivism.

    Symposium on Mobilities and Borders

An Event of the International Collaborative Research between HKBU and University of Melbourne through The Department of Humanities & Creative Writing, HKBU and Screen and Cultural Studies of the School of Culture and Communication, UoM

    September 30 and October 2, 2016

    Venue: AAB301, HKBU

Broad changes in Asia today are rapidly transforming the everyday processes by which mobility/speed, the sense of place, visual culture, literary and cinematic imaginations, body/subjectivity/desire, youth culture, consumption culture, and so on, are constituted.  However, comparative works that rigorously chart common questions and problematics, as well as posing important conjunctural questions for the future of Asia/Australia regional cultural studies, remain rare.

This symposium aims at bringing together scholars and postgraduate students from two locales – or two distinct formations of cultural studies, if you will – in Hong Kong and Australia in order to chart a space of dialogue for comparative learning and critique. The theme of “Mobilities & Borders”  is an extension of an IRRTF grant obtained by Fran Martin and Audrey Yue in Australia.  It turns our attention to critical issues formed in the dynamic mutual production between borders and mobilities in terms of human, capital, media, and technological flows.

This Symposium is a small, semi-closed symposium on an invitation basis only.  We hope to maximize discussion and interaction time among a small group of scholars from HKBU and UoM.

    Pivate Nationalism

    2016-04-07

Private Nationalism is an international art and cultural project that Rokko Juhász has been working for since 2014 till now, as a curator and artist. Influenced by Benedict Anderson’s book “Imagined Communities: Reflections on the Origin and Spread of Nationalism”, this project has been questioning national identities and issues raised by nationalism through contemporary art in East-Central Europe. Rokko Juhász will share his practice in this project, and his own observation and reflection on nationalism and cultural identities as an artist/activist.

Seminar: The Archaeology of Instagram by Prof. Helen Grace

Seminar: The Archaeology of Instagram by Prof. Helen Grace

    2016-03-18

[Seminar: The archaeology of Instagram by Prof. Helen Grace]

Digital photography has transformed historical images and snapshots, retroactively impacting on analogue photography, in the same way that the present always reconstitutes the past in its own image. But it also has a retro-futuristic effect because images from the past begin to look as if they were made very recently, staged perhaps in a studio set-up, projecting the future merely as an image. The past then appears simply as a filter that gets applied at some moment in the process. Time thus becomes a type of veneer, attached to a suitable substrate and creating affective responses adhered to memory as a second order processing. Underlying these effects of time as veneer is a long history of technology and technological devices, linked to competing political/economical systems. This presentation traces out these surprising genealogies, locating Hong Kong’s plastics and optical industries at the heart of the developments that eventually become Instagram.

The Traveler is Always An Alien: The Drama of Travel Writing

The Traveler is Always An Alien: The Drama of Travel Writing

    2015-10-12

    Abstract

Fiction teachers tell us to 'write what we know.' Travel writers--explorers, casual visitors, experienced drifters--always create a drama about things they do not know. Travel writers contend against the strange environment even as it gives them pleasure or excitement. The journey ultimately turns inward, and all good travel writing becomes a struggle for (and sometimes against) self-knowledge.

The End of Art and the Essence of Art: According to Arthur C. Danto (1925-2013)

    2015-04-27

Here is a story about art, about its end and its essence. It is a story that raises two questions with respect to contemporary Chinese art: the first is whether the history of art has come to an end in China with its opening up to the West in the 1980s, as Danto says art ended in the West with the death of modernism. The second is whether his definition applies to contemporary Chinese art.

Means Without Ends Politics, Technics, Media

Means Without Ends Politics, Technics, Media

    2015-04-23

    Abstract

If capitalism entails instrumental or means-ends action, and moral conduct (Kant) bequeaths the kingdom of pure ends, then what is at stake in a culture of pure means? Benjamin gives us a language and a politics of pure means in his ‘Critique of Violence’ that has been an inspiration for anarchism and Occupy.

For Agamben and Hannah Arendt there is, on the one hand, the instrumental means-ends action of the oikos (economy, private) and governmentality; and, on the other, the political activity of pure means of the polis and sovereignty. Here Arendt explicitly draws on the aesthetics and technics of Kant’s thirds critique, the Critique of Judgment: on judgment’s Zweckmäβigkeit ohne Zweck, or means without ends. Kant was influenced by contemporaneous biology in which organic life is a means not to an external end but to its own thriving and surviving. Thus Kant’s third critique is based on organic life as a self-technics.

Foucault also develops a technology of the self – that is neither governmentality nor sovereignty (polis) - in the construction of our subjectivities. Yet here at stake is subjectivity as a closed system. Asian thought, with its Confucian and Daoist background and its fundamental dyad, may offer a way out from this closed subjectivity. But so can today’s co-evolutionary media - in which flows of information, images, data may lead to radical opening and communicational connectivity.

Talk: Paradoxes of Health and Power in the Zhuangzi

Talk: Paradoxes of Health and Power in the Zhuangzi

    2015-03-27

    Abstract

This paper explores paradoxical illustrations of power or health (de) in the Zhuangzi.  It will attempt an alternative reading of the “crippled” characters in the fifth chapter of the Zhuangzi by looking them as parodies of the Confucian ideal of matching social constructs with a sincere commitment. It will argue that these characters echo the claim of chapter 38 of the Daodejing that “higher de is not de”, and thus ironically deconstruct the notion of quan de while at the same time also depicting a particular Daoist conception of  health and power.
